We had another gorgeous day to continue our Earth Week celebrations. The day began with CBS 7 / News Channel 8 reporter Eileen Whelan covering the festivities on Good Morning Washington. Above, Team Airlie joins in the fun!
Managing Director Kevin Carter and Culinary Director Jeff Witte talked with Eileen in the organic garden about the history of Earth Day and our commitment to sustainable practices. Jeff prepared a Caprese Salad with fresh tomatoes and herbs from the garden, and paired it with Early Mountain Vineyards' newly released Rosé.
Next, Eileen chatted with Alex and Kevin, a couple who will be getting married at Airlie in September. Alex also happens to be an Earth Day baby so we were extra excited to have her be a part of the festivities. They were here to help with a sneak peek of our special project. It will be unveiled on Friday, but for now here's a sneak peek! (If you just can't wait until Friday to find out what it's all about, watch the segment from this morning on ABC 7's website.)
Later in the afternoon, the staff participated in the Green Scavenger Hunt.
To round out the day, P.B. Smith Elementary School's Ecology Club visited us for some hands-on fun in the organic garden with Jeff Witte and our Local Food Project staff. The kids learned about till-free gardening, planted tomato plants for the pizza garden, and potted their own tomato plants to bring home. Once the pizza garden elements are ready, Jeff will visit the school to make pizza with the kids! As a fun surprise, the kids all got a pair of souvenir Airlie sunglasses as well!
