Airlie celebrates one year with American University

Labor Day 2017 was one for the books as we celebrated one year with American University. Over the past 12 months we’ve perfected the mantra “if you're going to do a thing, do it right and do it big.” So, we took that to heart and invited top-10 country artist Midland to perform a set for 400 of our closest friends. Not too shabby!

We lucked out with a beautiful sunny day to show off our beautiful landscape and grounds. Midland played their hit song “Drinkin’ Problem” among other original music and notable cover songs while guests enjoyed treats from more than 10 food trucks, local wineries and breweries. Lawn games next to Lake Stanley, and a mechanical bull were also favorites during the event

So, the question is - why blog about this? So glad you asked! Two things:

#1: We’re excited to be part of the AU family

Our successes over the past year have energized the team and we are looking forward to a bright future. Our Executive Director, Chuck Smith, said it best, “Airlie had a great year of growth and change and we are excited for all the upgrades we will execute in year two.”

The biggest change so far has been Airlie’s transformation back to its heritage as a working farm. We now have about 25 acres of land dedicated to growing produce. And miles of new fencing have been built for livestock, including Angus cattle and Berkshire pigs.

This fall, Harry’s restaurant arrives (open to the public!), serving a fresh approach for lunch and dinner. Local artisans have crafted the interior, and much ofthe food will be sourced from our own farm (even Midland lead singer Mark Wystrach can’t wait! See what he has to say about Harry’s!).

Coming up in the first quarter of 2018, our guest room experience will also be greatly enhanced with extensive renovations and upgrades planned by the design team of Hart and Howerton. We can't wait to start this project!

#2: We discovered Airlie is a perfect concert venue

We had an inkling that live music and Airlie grounds might be a good mix. However, the only way to find out was to test it out with a band and crowd of people. So we did, and are thrilled to learn that our venue is a perfect location for guests to enjoy a full concert experience.

The area adjacent to the Pavilion, and behind Airlie House provides a natural amphitheater-like setting for optimal viewing. Food trucks lined up on the farm road atop the hill, and the Pavilion also served as a venue for refreshments. Recreational activities and lawn games were stationed near Lake Stanley. Guests could also visit the LOVE statue or just explore the grounds. We have 300 acres - so there’s a lot to see, a lot to do, and a lot of room to spread out and make yourself at home.

In conclusion, we have a lot to be thankful for and proud of, and much more on the horizon.
