Our summer intern’s guide to the most popular selfie spots at Airlie

selfie_collage_with_phone.jpgAirlie’s picturesque setting in the rolling foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains makes it a perfect place for your next Instagram post. Whether it’s a group photo, romantic couple shot, or a quick selfie, we invite you to pick your favorite spot and tag us (@airlieva) to document your visit.

Based on the photos we’ve seen so far, it is clear our guests have some favorite backdrops, which we’ve listed below. The method we used to calculate the most popular spots is not highly technical, so these are not in any particular order.

Formal Gardens

Now, this may seem like an obvious location — one of the first things you’ll notice upon arriving at Airlie is the formal gardens — but there is always a new discovery around every turn. Explore every corner, and smile for the camera.

The Spanish Stairs

These stairs are the perfect backdrop for any occasion. Located on the side of Airlie House facing Lake Stanley, they give a feel of elegance and fairytale, and it’s not hard to snap a photo that will get you all the favorites.

If Virginia is for Lovers, what better way to show it than by taking a picture in front of our LOVEwork? Made of 95% recycled materials, the LOVEwork is a beautiful place to snap a selfie with the one you love. While you’re at it, express your enduring love for each other by placing a Love Lock on the “E” (and throw away the key in a box that can be found inside the “O”).

Airlie House

Dating back to 1899, Airlie House is a stately Georgian-revival residence (rebuilt in 1924 after a fire) which has since been expanded to include several meeting rooms, event spaces and dining outlets. It is also usually the first stop on property for guests to register at the front desk. A member of the Historic Hotels of America, it is a natural choice for photo ops.

Everywhere Else

While the specific locations we mentioned above are prime spots for insta-worthy pictures, you can take a great photo just about anywhere at Airlie. All it takes is a beautiful subject (you) and a beautiful backdrop.
